Yukon Quest 2011 Dog Sled Race
Yesterday was the start of the Yukon Quest 2011 1000 mile dog sled race from Whitehorse Yukon Territory to Fairbanks Alaska ( it changes direction each year ) and the weather was perfect. It's gone from - 40 to + 4 in the past two weeks and yesterday was just cool enough for the mushers and dogs to get off to a great start. Hans Gatt is going for his 5th Quest victory and this could be the year that he'll break his 2010 record of 9 days 26 minutes. There are so many veterans and rookies alike that are off to a great start and this is looking like the best window of weather we've had all winter for this race. Check out my Yukon Quest 2011 YouTube video from yesterday looking down from a great vantage point on the Takhini river early afternoon about 14 miles from the starting line. The sunshine was fabulous yesterday and today is just a nice. By supper time most of the teams will be in Braeburn eating the world's largest cinnamon buns and burgers. I'm not kidding! Here a picture of Steve's famous buns ( no pun intended ) Arrive hungry when you go there for a bite to eat.
