I wrote this song from the perspective of a divorced father who sees his former wife and children in a new relationship with a man who can provide the support and love that he was unable to offer during his marriage. Although he is indeed disappointed with the outcome of his marriage, he is content knowing that his family is now doing quite well in their new configuration. He is in fact, "a brighter shade of blue".
